What a tailor / seamstress actually does
Tailors and seamstresses measure, fit, alter, and construct garments to match an individual body and a specific customer's request. The daily work includes taking precise body measurements, marking alteration lines directly on fabric, removing stitches from pieces that need to be reworked, and pinning or basting a garment on a live client to judge how it hangs before committing to a cut.
Much of the job is judgment made by eye and hand in the moment: tapering a waist, adding padding to smooth a shoulder line, shortening a hem so it breaks correctly over a shoe, repairing a pocket or zipper without it showing, or adapting a pattern because a customer's proportions don't match any standard size chart.
Tailors also develop and modify designs from scratch — cutting fabric from a custom pattern, creating buttonholes by hand or machine, and choosing construction techniques based on how a specific fabric behaves under tension.
Every fitting is a negotiation between what a customer describes wanting and what the tailor can see and feel will actually work on that body, in that fabric, for that occasion — a form of real-time diagnostic and aesthetic judgment that has to happen with cloth and a live client in the room, not from a photo or a spec sheet.
