Marketing Manager
Structural exposure score derived from 2 independent sources (OpenAI "GPTs are GPTs" (human_rating_beta) + AIOE (Felten, Raj & Seamans)), each normalized against its own full reference population and combined by simple average, then converted to a percentile.
In real usage data, AI shows up in this job about as often as the average occupation: not high, not negligible.
Technical detail
Based on Microsoft's "Working with AI" study of real Copilot conversations mapped to O*NET tasks (arXiv 2507.07935): Marketing Managers scored 0.189 on AI applicability, within one standard deviation of the cross-occupation mean (0.159, stdev 0.098) across all 785 SOC codes studied — banded here as Medium real-world AI usage relative to other occupations.
Corroborating signal from the Anthropic Economic Index (Claude.ai/API conversations, a different product and userbase than the Microsoft data above): Marketing Managers has an observed-exposure value of 0.32, showing measurable Claude usage tied to this occupation's tasks — treat as directional confirmation, not a second precise score.
What a marketing manager actually does
Marketing managers decide how a company, product line or brand reaches its buyers and what that effort should cost. O*NET lists 21 tasks for the occupation (11-2021.
00): formulating and directing marketing activities and policies, using sales forecasting and strategic planning to protect profitability, developing pricing strategies, initiating market research studies and analyzing their findings, evaluating the financial side of product development, negotiating contracts with vendors and distributors, coordinating promotions and trade shows, conferring with legal staff on problems such as copyright infringement, and reviewing and editing marketing content. They also direct the hiring, training and evaluation of marketing and sales staff.
Common titles include brand manager, product manager, product marketing manager, marketing communications manager and marketing director.
The working day is mostly communication. O*NET reports that 100% of respondents use e-mail every day and 90% take telephone conversations every day, and the technology list reads like a modern marketing stack: HubSpot, Marketo, Salesforce, Google Ads, Google Analytics, Tableau, Adobe Creative Cloud and Microsoft Excel.
BLS says these managers typically need a bachelor's degree, usually in a business field such as marketing or in communications, plus work experience in a related occupation such as sales representative, market research analyst or public relations specialist. BLS Employment Projections data (Table 1. 2) puts that experience at five years or more.
The pay is high: BLS reports a May 2025 median of $166,790, and among the top industries BLS lists for marketing managers, information pays the highest median, at $192,600.
Why it reads this way
Marketing Manager scores 9/100 on this site's structural exposure measure (Medium confidence), which is in the higher-risk band; a lower score means more exposed. Both inputs point the same way. OpenAI's GPTs-are-GPTs ratings give the occupation a raw exposure value of 0. 58, and the AIOE index (Felten, Raj and Seamans) gives 1. 32. After each is normalized against all occupations, both sit about 1. 3 standard deviations on the exposed side of the average.
The reason is visible in the O*NET task list. Strategy, pricing, forecasting, market research, budget evaluation and content review are written, analytical tasks of the kind language models already handle well.
Nothing structural stands between that work and a software tool. Marketing has no occupational license, so there is no state board and no personally held credential. The one federal rule we checked, the FTC's final rule banning fake reviews and testimonials (announced August 14, 2024), explicitly covers AI-generated fake reviews, but its prohibitions are aimed mainly at businesses, and it creates no license or personally held credential for the person in the marketing manager's seat.
We treat that as a compliance duty, not a wall around the occupation. The work is also office-based: O*NET's highlighted work context is e-mail, phone calls and sitting, so there is no physical task for robotics to be absent from.
Real use is documented, mostly on the execution side. Klarna's May 2024 results, reported by Marketing Dive from the company's press release, showed sales and marketing spend down 11% in the first quarter despite running more campaigns. Spending on external translation, production, CRM and social agencies fell 25%, an in-house tool called Copy Assistant handled 80% of copywriting, and Marketing Dive reported that about 37% of the quarter's marketing savings, roughly $10 million a year, were attributable to AI.
These are company-reported figures, and we found no reliable number for how many marketing managers Klarna employs or employed.
The clearest hard data on jobs comes from Gartner, and it concerns the bottom of the ladder. Gartner's September 29, 2026 release reports a survey of 1,303 senior leaders, conducted January to April 2026, in which 18% of marketing leaders have eliminated certain functional roles due to automation, 16% have created new roles and nearly one-third have redesigned roles.
Gartner predicts that by 2030 AI will let most high-performing marketing teams eliminate "the traditional bottom rungs of the corporate ladder", which the release frames as entry-level roles. The release does not say which roles were cut.
A separate Gartner survey of 402 senior marketing leaders (conducted August to October 2025, released February 23, 2026) found 65% of CMOs expect AI to dramatically change the CMO role within two years, yet only 32% think significant changes to the profile and skills are needed.
The counter-evidence is real and should be weighed. BLS projects employment of marketing managers to grow 6. 9% from 2025 to 2035 (421,600 jobs in 2025 rising to 450,800, per its Employment Projections Table 1. 2; the OOH chart rounds this to 7%, and BLS's Occupation Finder labels it much faster than average; the combined advertising, promotions and marketing managers group is 6%, faster than average), with about 34,000 openings a year.
For marketing managers the OOH says they are expected to stay in demand as organizations use marketing campaigns to maintain and expand market share, and will likely be sought for advice on pricing and on reaching customers.
The OOH sentence about AI makes a narrower claim: fewer advertising and promotions managers, a separate occupation projected to fall 4%, are expected to be needed to oversee advertising staff, because managers and staff will use AI to generate, test and modify digital ads faster. That sentence is not about marketing managers.
Usage measures are elevated but not extreme. Microsoft's Working with AI study gives marketing managers an AI applicability score of 0. 189, within one standard deviation of the cross-occupation mean of 0. 159. Anthropic's Economic Index observed-exposure value is 0. 32. By our own calculation that is above about 92% of the 756 occupations in Anthropic's file, but 411 of those score zero; among the 345 non-zero occupations it is above about 83%.
Treat it as directional confirmation that Claude is being used on marketing tasks, not as a measure of job loss.
The honest reading is a high-exposure task profile, documented AI use on execution work, and growing headcount demand so far. The verdict follows the checklist rubric: a score below 60 with no legal or physical protection gives At risk, and demand growth does not change that. Confidence is Medium, not High, because the evidence that AI will replace marketing managers outright, or is displacing this exact role today, is thin.
The likelier pressure, and this is our inference rather than a measured result, is on the junior roles that feed the manager seat, since BLS says managers typically come up through related experience that Gartner expects AI to compress.
Skills this role draws on

Median source: BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook / OEWS May 2025 annual median wage for Marketing Managers (11-2021), $166,790, matching O*NET OnLine's 2025 median; the 'average' field holds the median, not a mean. min is the 10th percentile (BLS: less than $90,260) and max the 90th percentile (BLS: more than $293,610), both as printed on the BLS OOH page for marketing managers.
Safer, skill-adjacent careers
These aren't generic "consider retraining" suggestions. Each one shares real skill or task overlap with marketing manager work, and each one scores meaningfully higher on our structural exposure scale, with the reasoning shown below.
Marketing managers already know pricing, positioning, local market research and lead generation, and BLS lists sales work among the usual feeder experiences for the manager role. Real estate agents apply those skills directly under a state license with a fiduciary duty: score 24 versus 9, verdict AI-resistant despite the paperwork. The trade-off is large: projected growth is only 1.7% and the site's median pay figure is about $52,830, far below a marketing manager's $166,790.
Customer segmentation, product positioning and consultative selling carry over to insurance sales, where every state requires a line-specific producer license and a licensed human must give advice or issue a quote: score 11 versus 9, verdict AI-resistant despite the paperwork. The score gap is small, growth is 3.3% and the median is about $62,280, so this is a license-protected move, not a pay-matching one.
A marketing director who has run budgets, staff and campaigns has the management profile for a brokerage, where one licensed individual must hold client trust funds and answer for supervising every agent: score 19 versus 9, verdict AI-resistant despite the paperwork. Brokers need 1 to 5 years of supervised agent experience first, so this is a multi-year route, with growth of 0.8% and a median near $73,220.
Related at-risk roles
Other roles with a similar exposure profile or a shared set of safer moves.
Marketing Manager scores 9/100 (Medium structural confidence), with no occupational license and no physical task protecting the core of the job, so the checklist rubric gives At risk. Real AI use is documented on execution work (Klarna's 2024 cuts to agency spend and AI-written copy) and Gartner's 2026 survey found 18% of marketing leaders have eliminated certain roles due to automation, with Gartner's forecast aimed at entry-level rungs. Confidence is Medium because BLS still projects 6.9% employment growth for marketing managers from 2025 to 2035 and we found no measured displacement of managers themselves; current evidence suggests the tasks are more exposed than the headcount has been so far, as of 2026-10-28.
This is a researched judgment (checklist v1.2), not a statistical measurement — it sits alongside, not instead of, the structural exposure signal above. Next scheduled review: 2027-04-28.
