What a urban and regional planner actually does
Urban and regional planners develop and administer the land-use policies that shape how a community grows: zoning maps and ordinances, comprehensive plans, transportation and public-utility corridors, and housing density rules. A typical project starts with data analysis, mapping population trends, traffic patterns, and environmental constraints using GIS software, then moves into drafting policy recommendations and cost-effectiveness assessments for elected officials and planning commissions to act on.
