What a hydrologist actually does
Hydrologists study how water moves through and above the Earth — rivers, lakes, groundwater aquifers, snowpack, and rainfall — to answer questions with real consequences: how much water is safely available for a growing city, whether a proposed dam or well field will drain a neighboring aquifer, how far a contamination plume has spread beneath a former industrial site, or how high a river will rise in a hundred-year flood. Desk work involves building computer models in tools like MATLAB and ArcGIS to simulate how a watershed or aquifer will respond to a drought, a new well, or a changing climate, then writing up findings that inform decisions by water utilities, engineering firms, mining and oil companies, and state and federal regulators.
Most positions require at least a bachelor's degree in hydrology, geology, or a related earth science, and a majority of working hydrologists hold a master's degree — this is Job Zone 5, the most extensive-preparation tier O*NET tracks.
