What a nuclear technician actually does
Nuclear technicians support the scientists and engineers who operate nuclear power plants and research facilities, with radiation safety at the center of the job. The daily work includes operating radiation detection instruments to measure exposure levels in work areas, collecting air, water, and surface samples for contamination testing, and directing personnel out of areas with unsafe radiation readings before anyone gets hurt.
Technicians decontaminate tools, equipment, and work surfaces by hand using soap, solvents, or abrasive methods, log dosimetry readings for personnel working in controlled areas, and help operate and maintain the reactor-support and radiation-monitoring equipment used in day-to-day plant operations. The role requires wearing specialized protective equipment as standard practice — full-protection suits and, at times, self-contained breathing apparatus — and every task is bounded by strict, federally mandated radiation-exposure limits.
Most technicians enter through an associate degree in nuclear technology or a related science field, or through Navy nuclear program training, since the combination of physics knowledge and hands-on radiation-safety procedure isn't something employers expect from a general science degree alone.
