What a water and wastewater treatment plant operator actually does
Water and wastewater treatment operators run the plants that make tap water safe to drink and treat sewage before it's released back into rivers and lakes — a job with direct public-health consequences if it's done wrong.
The daily work includes reading gauges, meters, and SCADA control screens to monitor flow rates, chemical dosing, and treatment-process stages; collecting water and sewage samples and running lab tests for contaminants, pH, and chlorine residual; and adjusting chemical feed rates or equipment settings when a reading drifts out of spec. Operators also inspect and maintain pumps, filters, and valves with hand and power tools, and are the ones who respond when an alarm goes off at 3 a. m.
because a pump failed or a contamination event is suspected. Certification is mandatory in essentially every U. S. state and tied directly to safe drinking water and clean water law, requiring passed exams and ongoing continuing education. Most operators start in entry-level plant roles and work up through certification grades (often Class I through Class IV) as they gain experience, rather than entering the field with a specific college degree.
