What a locomotive engineer actually does
Locomotive engineers operate electric, diesel-electric, steam, or gas-turbine-electric locomotives to move freight or passengers across the rail network, interpreting train orders, wayside and cab signals, and railroad operating rules in real time as track conditions, weather, and other rail traffic change along the route.
Daily work includes inspecting the locomotive before each run to verify fuel, sand, and water supplies and check for mechanical problems, continuously monitoring gauges and meters for speed, amperage, battery charge, and air pressure, and making the actual operating decisions, when to brake, how to manage train slack and momentum on grades, how to respond to an unexpected signal or obstruction, that keep a train and everyone on or near the tracks safe.
Engineers carry very high responsibility for coworker and public safety (78% report this as a core part of the job), wear safety equipment daily, and work through noise, vibration, and genuinely hazardous conditions, night runs, extreme weather, remote track sections, as a routine part of the work. Locomotive engineers work for freight railroads, passenger and commuter rail systems, and transit agencies.
