What a railroad conductor actually does
Railroad conductors are the crew member in charge of a train's overall operation, coordinating everything the engineer doesn't handle directly: relaying signals and track authority instructions, directing the coupling and switching of railcars in a yard, inspecting cars en route for mechanical problems or shifted loads, and documenting delays, incidents, and any irregularity that occurs during the run.
On freight trains, conductors walk the length of the train during inspections, operate manual track switches, and communicate constantly by radio with dispatchers and the engineer to keep a multi-mile-long train moving safely through yards, junctions, and grade crossings. Yardmasters, who share this O*NET occupational code, plan and direct the switching moves that build outbound trains car by car inside a rail yard.
Both roles carry real legal responsibility: a conductor's paperwork and radio calls are the record regulators and the railroad rely on if something goes wrong. Most conductors start as brakemen or switchmen and are trained and certified by their employing railroad under federal oversight, not through a college program.
