What a ship captain actually does

Ship captains — the licensed masters and mates who command commercial vessels — hold legal responsibility for a ship, its crew, and its cargo from departure to arrival. The job means setting and adjusting course using weather, tide, and hazard information, directing docking and undocking in tight or congested waterways, supervising cargo loading and crew operations, running safety and emergency drills, and maintaining the official logs that document everything that happens aboard.

On cargo ships, tankers, tugs, and ferries, a captain reads changing conditions in real time: a sudden squall, a mechanical failure, a near-collision in a shipping lane, or a medical emergency thousands of miles from a hospital, and makes the final call with no one else to defer to. Mates work under the captain on larger vessels, standing watch and handling navigation duties in rotation.
